This has been an eventfull week I must say. The Clarks came and after they meet with the Hoges, the outgoing CES missionaries, we picked them up and took them shopping for their bedding. We had gone to the Loppy market in the morning and found some chairs for their apartment. We had helped Hoges move out of the apartment that is by the office. Well, after lunch at Ikea and shopping at Yusk we started home. Oh by the way, the Clarks could not get any money out of their banks to buy anything. Our money was low because we had taken out a lot for beds and things for the mission. We were able to put the So we made it through the weekend for food. Of course, the stores close by 5 pm on Sat so you have to plan ahead.
When we got close to Borups Ale, the street the office is on and the Clarks apartment, it was blocked off. We asked the policy if we could go through to get to our office and they told us the police were fighting with the youth who were demonstrating. The youth had a building they had taken over by squatters rights which the government demolished because it belonged to someone. Ever since they have these demonstrations which most of the time are peaceful. They do graffiti along the way and leave a lot of papers and garbage.. Well here we were trying to get the Clarks back to their place and us home to listen to conference.
We called the AP to see if they were home. Well, they were in the office watching the demo. They could feel the tear gas coming in the widows. It was right out in front of our office. There were about 1,000 young people in black with their chains hanging off their clothes and funny hair etc. A little scary. So the missionaries were locked in the office so they just stayed there and listened to conference. We dropped off the Clark at the stake house and then fought the traffic to our home to listen to conference in the beauty of our apartment without any interference. This was something we really need. Just to be alone and have some downtime feasting on the words of the prophets.
We looked for information about what went on with the youth but didn’t hear anything. It was in the paper but we don’t read the paper besides it is in Danish and we don’t really understand. We heard the young people were trying to buy a home or place for them to meet but the government hadn’t given it to them yet. They were trying to get it by squatters rights again. Will they ever learn? There is an area in Copenhagen where in the 70’s the hippis took over and tourist can come in and look at it but it is very dangerous. One of our missionaries got in a park close by not realizing where they were and someone came up to them and told them to leave or they would be killed. The police can’t do anything in that area and I think that is why they are trying to stop these youth from controlling another area. The only thing that has gone on is they have burned a car and garbage cans.
There was an arrest last month for some Alcida men who were planning on using the demonstrations of the youth to blow up something. They were caught, thank heavens. But it makes you wonder where the others are. There are a lot of muslims around. In fact the sister use to live in Norroebro about 10 blocks from the office, right in the middle of the muslim area and close to the old house the youth had.
But, things seem to be ok.
Now we are driving to Jylland for zone conference. We left at 5:30 to be there by 9am. We have gone across the big bridge which costs $40 each way. Sometimes we go over the day before, especially when it is on a weekend. But as you can see, we were too busy.
We are listening to Elder Eyring, I think I will make a list of how the Lord has helped me this week. Let you know later. Yes he helped me a lot this week.
